5 Resolutions for Your BJJ Journey

Resolutions are typically made at the start of a new year, however, we believe that there is no wrong time to start making resolutions to improve your life and your BJJ journey. So here are the top 5 resolutions we have for your jiujitsu journey. You can take one or all of these on at any time to see results…

1.     Set your goals

This may seem obvious but setting goals is an important step for any journey, and that includes your BJJ journey. Your goal can be as long as a whole book of detailed notes, or it can be as simple as one goal is written down and put on the fridge. The idea is to do whatever works for you, as long as you write them down and reflect on them regularly so that they stay at the front of your mind.

It can also be helpful while you are writing your goals to remember why you are doing BJJ in the first place. Reflect on why you started and where you see yourself in 5 or 10 years of training.

2.     Make a training schedule (and stick to it)

BJJ is simple in the way that classes are set for you, all you need to do is turn up. You may hear your coaches say to come to class…even when you don’t feel like it. This is said for a good reason. Always come to class on your decided days, unless you are sick. Even if you are injured, you should come to class and participate in any part you can. If your injury stops you from doing any training, then you can simply have a seat and watch the class. The routine of attending class regularly is one of the cornerstones of a successful jiujitsu journey.

3.     Clean up your lifestyle

This is easy to integrate as it is usually among the most common of new year resolutions. The three integral aspects to look at are your sleep, diet, and training schedule. One important thing to do is to make sure these pillars of your life work together and enhance your overall wellbeing. This will be not only beneficial to your jiujitsu journey but all other areas of your life too.

4.     Find Your Balance

BJJ is quite physically and mentally demanding and therefore, the idea of finding your balance focuses on finding other activities that focus on recovery and relaxation.  This can be done in many forms such as; meditation, stretching, yoga, breathing exercises, and more. By following this resolution, you’ll also find that you are more in tune with your body and will avoid injury during training.

5.     Push yourself out of your comfort zone

If you have only just started the gentle art, then you will already be familiar with being out of your comfort zone. However, for those who have been practicing for longer, you may find yourself getting too comfortable in some areas of training. People get ‘comfortable’ in many different ways. This can be as simple as training with the same partner or not fully participating in warm-ups and drills. A very common one is to be focusing on your strengths rather than your weaknesses in techniques. It is important that you recognise these habits quickly and spend time working on them to ensure you continue to develop in the art of jiujitsu.
